The Plastics Recycling & Waste-to-Wealth Products Course at the Zebra Liquid Vocational Institute is a 1-month intensive vocational program designed to turn plastic waste into commercial products. This course provides practical skills in identifying, sorting, shredding, melting, and molding waste plastics into durable goods such as pavement pavers, fencing posts, tiles, and household utensils. Plastic pollution poses major urban environmental challenges; this course provides a direct business solution by converting environmental waste into income-generating opportunities.
Combining technical processing skills with safety training and entrepreneurship, the course enables learners to establish plastic collection hubs or small-scale recycling operations. Graduates receive post-training mentorship and support to access industrial buyers and market networks.
By the end of the course, participants will:
Identify and classify major polymer types (PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS) using simple burn and float testing methods.
Master plastic collection, washing, sorting, and manual/mechanical shredding operations.
Safely operate low-cost thermal molding, compression, and extrusion equipment to make recycled products.
Produce commercial items like plastic-sand eco-pavers, fencing posts, interlocking tiles, and molded crafts.
Develop business plans, pricing strategies, safety compliance protocols, and market distribution pathways.
Week 1: Introduction to Plastic Waste and Polymer Identification
Environmental Impact of Plastic: Global/local pollution challenges and the economic value of recycled polymers.
Polymer Types & Codes: Distinguishing PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and OTHER plastics.
Field Sorting & Testing: Density float tests, burn/smell tests, and contamination removal.
Safety & Hygiene: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ventilation, handling sharp objects, and fire safety.
Hands-On Practice: Sorting mixed community plastic waste into specific polymer categories and cleaning materials.
Week 2: Pre-Processing and Shredding Techniques
Collection Logistics: Establishing community collection points and aggregator pricing.
Washing & Drying Systems: Water-efficient washing basins, friction washing, and drying techniques.
Shredding & Granulation: Manual cutting techniques and operating mechanical plastic shredders.
Storage & Inventory: Storing shredded flakes safely to prevent contamination and fire hazards.
Hands-On Practice: Operating a plastic shredder to process cleaned HDPE/PP bottles into uniform recycled flakes.
Week 3: Thermal Processing and Product Manufacturing
Thermal Processing Basics: Melting temperatures, heat control, and avoiding toxic fume emissions.
Plastic-Sand Composite Tech: Mixing shredded plastic with sand to make high-strength building pavers and tiles.
Compression Molding: Using basic molds and mechanical presses to form paving slabs, bricks, and posts.
Finishing & Quality Testing: Trimming, cooling, strength testing, and quality control.
Hands-On Practice: Melting LDPE/PP plastic with sand to mold durable, waterproof building pavers and fencing posts.
Week 4: Business Operations, Marketing, and Compliance
Business Models in Recycling: Aggregator model, product manufacturing model, and municipal waste contracts.
Costing & Financial Planning: Calculating collection costs, energy consumption, labor, and profit margins.
Environmental Compliance: Obtaining NEMA/local government waste handling permits and safety compliance.
Sales & Market Linkages: Selling pavers to construction contractors, schools, municipalities, and private homeowners.
Hands-On Practice: Preparing a business plan for a local recycling enterprise and pitching to construction buyers.
Trainer-Learner Ratio: 1 trainer per 30 learners for personalized instruction.
80% Practical Learning: Focus on product creation and hands-on practice.
