The Hydroponics & Vertical Urban Farming Course at the Zebra Liquid Vocational Institute is a 1-month intensive vocational training program designed to teach modern soil-less agriculture techniques. This course provides practical skills in growing high-value vegetables and herbs using nutrient-water solutions in space-efficient vertical towers, recycled PVC pipe systems, and shade structures. Urban farming addresses land scarcity, water stress, and food insecurity, enabling participants to produce fresh organic produce in urban and peri-urban environments.
Combining hands-on farm construction with agricultural business training, this course empowers learners to establish commercial urban farms or household food production systems. Participants receive ongoing technical support to help set up systems and access local produce markets.
By the end of the course, participants will:
Master the principles of soil-less farming, hydroponic systems (NFT, DWC, Drip), and vertical space optimization.
Construct low-cost vertical farming systems using local and recycled materials.
Formulate, measure, and manage hydroponic nutrient solutions, pH levels, and EC levels.
Manage crop cycles for high-value leafy greens, tomatoes, herbs, and vegetables from seed to harvest.
Acquire business skills to market hydroponic produce to hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and local communities
Week 1: Introduction to Hydroponics and System Construction
Fundamentals of Hydroponics: Soil-less culture advantages, water efficiency, and crop suitability.
System Types: Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Deep Water Culture (DWC), Dutch Buckets, and Vertical Towers.
Materials & Tools: PVC pipes, water pumps, tubing, net pots, growing media (cocopeat, rockwool, gravel).
Building Systems: Measuring, cutting, drilling, and assembling vertical PVC towers and A-frame hydroponic rigs.
Hands-On Practice: Constructing a functional vertical hydroponic pipe tower using basic tools and recycled containers.
Week 2: Nutrient Management, Water Quality, and Seedling Care
Water Chemistry & Quality: Testing EC (Electrical Conductivity), pH levels, and water temperature.
Hydroponic Nutrient Formulation: Preparing macronutrient and micronutrient stock solutions.
Nursery Management: Seed selection, germination techniques in cocopeat, and seedling transplanting.
System Operation: Pump timer automation, aeration, reservoir maintenance, and system flushing.
Hands-On Practice: Mixing nutrient solutions, adjusting pH using meters, and transplanting seedlings into vertical towers.
Week 3: Crop Management, Pest Control, and Harvesting
Crop Management: Care for spinach, lettuce, kale, strawberries, herbs, and tomatoes.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Organic pest control, sticky traps, neem oil applications, and disease prevention.
Environmental Control: Managing shade netting, airflow, and temperature in urban micro-climates.
Harvesting & Post-Harvest Care: Hygienic harvesting, cleaning, grading, and cold chain preservation.
Hands-On Practice: Pruning, harvesting, packaging leafy greens, and conducting routine system water maintenance.
Week 4: Business Management, Branding, and Market Access
Hydroponic Farm Economics: Capital investment, electricity/water costs, yield estimation, and profit margins.
Marketing Urban Produce: Target markets (supermarkets, restaurants, eco-markets) and premium pricing.
Packaging & Branding: Eco-friendly packaging and farm-to-table marketing strategies.
Scaling & Financial Planning: Setting up commercial shade-house systems and managing expansion.
Hands-On Practice: Developing an urban hydroponics business plan and preparing a sales pitch for local produce buyers.
