The Sustainable Apiculture Course at the Zebra Liquid Vocational Institute is a 1-month intensive vocational training program. This course provides practical skills in modern, eco-friendly beekeeping, hive construction, colony management, pest control, and honey harvesting. Bee populations are crucial for crop pollination and biodiversity; apiculture provides a high-yield, low-land agricultural enterprise producing honey, beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly.
Combining woodwork fabrication, bee biology, hygienic harvesting, and honey processing business skills, this course enables participants to launch commercial apiaries. Graduates receive ongoing technical mentorship and market connections.
By the end of the course, participants will:
Understand honeybee biology, caste structures (Queen, Worker, Drone), and seasonal colony behaviors.
Construct sustainable beehives (Top-Bar Hives, Langstroth Hives) using locally sourced timber.
Select optimal apiary sites, colonize hives using baiting techniques, and manage bee yards safely.
Harvest honey hygienically, process raw honeycomb, and extract high-grade beeswax and propolis.
Establish an apiculture enterprise, price honey products, meet quality standards, and access buyers.
Week 1: Bee Biology, Environmental Value, and Hive Construction
Introduction to Apiculture: Ecosystem pollination benefits and global/local honey market demand.
Honeybee Biology & Social Structure: Roles of the Queen, Workers, and Drones, and brood cycles.
Hive Systems: Comparing traditional log hives, Kenya Top-Bar (KTB) hives, and frame Langstroth hives.
Carpentry for Beekeepers: Measuring, cutting, and assembling Top-Bar beehives using local timber.
Hands-On Practice: Constructing a full Kenya Top-Bar (KTB) beehive and top-bars in the carpentry workshop.
Week 2: Apiary Site Selection, Setup, and Hive Colonization
Apiary Site Selection: Evaluating shade, water sources, flora availability, and safety from human noise.
Safety Equipment: Operating smokers, wearing bee suits, gloves, veils, and handling hive tools.
Hive Baiting & Catching Swarms: Formulating natural lures using beeswax, propolis, and lemongrass oil.
Routine Apiary Management: Inspection procedures, comb management, and preventing swarming.
Hands-On Practice: Baiting hives with lemongrass propolis mix, installing hives in an apiary, and practicing smoker operation.
Week 3: Hive Health, Pest Control, and Smokeless Harvesting
Bee Pests & Diseases: Managing Varroa mites, wax moths, ants, small hive beetles, and hive predators.
Seasonal Apiary Care: Feeding colonies during dry seasons (sugar syrup) and water provision.
Smokeless/Hygienic Harvesting: Identifying capped honeycombs and harvesting without killing bees.
Honey Processing: Gravity straining, settling tanks, moisture testing using refractometers, and bottling.
Hands-On Practice: Conducting live hive inspections (using full protective suits), harvesting honeycomb, and straining honey.
Week 4: Value Addition, Agribusiness, and Market Access
Value-Added Products: Processing beeswax for cosmetics, candles, leather polish, and harvesting propolis.
Honey Quality Standards: Meeting UNBS parameters for moisture content (<18%), purity, and clear labeling.
Business Planning & Costing: Apiary setup budgets, payback periods, pricing per kg, and profit projections.
Marketing & Branding: Packaging design, storytelling, and establishing sales links to retail stores.
Hands-On Practice: Crafting beeswax candles and skin balms, packaging honey jars, and presenting an apiary business plan.
Trainer-Learner Ratio: 1 trainer per 30 learners to ensure personalized instruction.
80% Practical Learning: Focus on hands-on practice to reinforce skills in sustainable apiculture.
Follow-Up Support:
6 months of mentorship to assist in establishing beekeeping businesses.
Guidance in connecting with local markets and suppliers.
Support in obtaining any necessary business licenses or certifications.
Participants will be assessed through:
Practical Skills Assessment: Demonstrating techniques in setting up apiculture environments.
